Classes to address distracted driving

It is a priority for many car makers to design vehicles that are the safest possible and provide protection to the occupants. This can be all for naught, if the driver of the vehicle insists on participating in distracting driving behavior.

Distractions associated with cell phones are often the first thing that comes to mind when someone thinks about a driver who is distracted. The reality however, is many activities fall under this umbrella including:

  • Eating
  • Reading a book
  • Applying make up
  • Brushing teeth

Drivers engaging in activities of this nature could end up driving through red lights, crowding intersections, lane-hogging, failing to signal and disregarding traffic signals. In turn, this could lead to collisions with other vehicles, motorcyclists, bicyclists and pedestrians. These accidents could result in serious injuries and possibly even death.

Some believe at the heart of this issue is the “me-first” behavior that so many people today engage in. To address this, interested drivers can attend a classed designed to help manage “traffic emotions.” The idea behind these classes is to get drivers to be aware of other drivers around them and what they are doing.

Distracting behaviors can also be deemed negligent. In these situations, when the injuries suffered in the collision are serious enough, it may make sense to take legal action against that party. If successful, it could result in financial damages. Since every case of this nature is different can be complex, it is advisable to seek the assistance of a personal injury lawyer to pursue this course of action.
